Cameroon Indomitable Lions‘ former Capitain, Théophile Abéga has died
The sad news came in the early hours of Thursday 15 November 2012. According to sources close to the deceased, the former captain of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions had been admitted at the Yaounde General Hospital since about two weeks, where he passed away on Thursday morning. Up to now (3:30pm), the real causes of the death have not been revealed to the public. However, sources close to the deceased revealed that the health of the 1984 African Player of the Year had taken a hit. He complained about his health two weeks ago, just after he returned from the United States of America. But few days ago, he seemed to be in good health according to people close to his family.
“Doctor” Abega made an appearance on October 11, when the past glories of Cameroon football went to visit the Indomitable Lions ahead of their encounter with Cape Verde (played on October 14, 2012). He then appeared in good shape, as described by some observers. The drama that would happen a month later would have been hard to foresee at the time.
Arguably the most elegant and one of the most talented players of his generation, which include Roger Milla and Thomas Nkono, Abega was very gifted. He wowed the crowd with his moves during the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and captained the side that won the African Cup of Nations for Cameroon in 1984. Before then, he had captained Canon of Yaounde to glory at many African competitions including CAF Champions league and the African Cup Winners’ Competition. He eventually moved to France and played with Toulouse, a ligue 1 side.
At the time of his death, Abega was the Mayor of Yaounde 4 a subdivision of the Cameroon’s capital city.
